NYLON STOCKING SCULPTURE
First student create a base using a square block. They drill holes into the base and attach wire into the holes.
Then the students cover the wire and the base with a single nylon stocking. They then form the wire to a pleasing form.
Students then cover the nylon with Gesso.
After sculpture are dry student can use paint to give their sculpture character. Painting the sculptures took them to the next level by creating character and bold statements.
It would be more interesting to give them a visual task? Portray rising smoke? Morph from one template to another? this is just 'pleasing'- or 'meaningless'?
ReplyDeleteTeaching students how to create 3D forms that are interesting from all angles presents a wonderful challenge! The results are pieces that display individual creativity and personality. Students appreciate taking ownership of their work and having choice, rather than giving them a task that they must do to "please" the teacher.
ReplyDeleteArt does not have to match your couch, or have a "meaning." It can be about "feeling" and expression.
ReplyDeleteGreat lesson! I do have a couple of questions!
ReplyDelete1) How do you secure the wire into the holes?
2) What gauge of wire do you use?
3) As the students are adjusting the wire, must they stretch or let out the nylon or does it kind of do that on it's own?
4) How do you secure the nylon to the bottom of the base without it causing the base to become unbalanced?
Thank you again!
what paint do you use to colour the sculpture?
